What is Paediatric First Aid?

The emergency care and techniques used to treat sick or injured infants and children before professional medical assistance can be obtained are referred to as paediatric first aid. Given that young children and infants have different medical needs than adults and respond differently to illness and injury, it is an essential skill set for parents, carers, educators, and anyone else who works with children.

The following are some essential elements and features of paediatric first aid:

The ABCs (airway, breathing, and circulation) involve evaluating the child to make sure their heart is pumping blood correctly, their airway is clear, and their breathing is efficient. This priority sequence is often followed by any intervention in a paediatric emergency.
Choking: Because a child or infant's airways are smaller than an adult's and can become blocked more easily, it is important to know how to respond in such situations. There are differences in the methods used to relieve choking in older and newborn children.
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or CPR: Depending on the child's size and age, different techniques and forces are used for paediatric and adult CPR. It is imperative that rescuers be properly trained in CPR for infants and children.
Taking care of cuts, scrapes, and more serious wounds, as well as controlling bleeding while lowering the chance of infection and additional harm, is known as wound care and bleeding control.
Handling Burns and Scalds: Recognising the various levels of burns and knowing how to treat them is important, particularly for children whose skin is more delicate than that of adults.
Managing Seizures: Identifying and treating paediatric seizures, including fever-induced seizures (febrile seizures).Managing Fractures and Dislocations: Being able to immobilise and shield hurt joints or limbs until medical assistance arrives.
